- Company History
Main Steel's origins began a half century ago when one of Thomas A. Mallan’s inspirations took shape. The company began as a one line sheet polisher in the Bronx, NY, in 1956. Tom’s idea: to assist and supplement the polishing work that local distributors already did. Once the company began to flourish in New York, Tom turned his thoughts to serving additional markets and began Main Steel’s expansion in 1973 in Atlanta. This was soon followed by another plant in Chicago. Since then, because of Tom’s foresight, Main Steel has expanded its operations through all of North America. To better serve our clients, we have strategically located our 8 facilities and respective processing equipment in key geographic areas to be near all major metals markets. This allows freight costs to be minimized by having the metal processed at a facility close to where it will ultimately be used.
We have also grown in the types of processes that are offered. Our customer base has evolved to encompass not only distribution, but also the mills and certain end users in applications other than just stainless steel. Today, Main Steel, widely acknowledged as the industry leader, is the largest independent bright metals toll processor in the United States, employing over 350 people.-
